General aviation in Europe is becoming more environmentally conscious and sustainable with the introduction of unleaded aviation gasoline as a drop-in replacement for conventional 100LL avgas containing the fuel additive tetraethyl lead (TEL) as an octane booster. Airports including Ganderkesee and Mönchengladbach in Germany have started supplying Swift Fuels 100R unleaded avgas for piston-engine aircraft. A 100-Motor-Octane unleaded fuel, Swift’s 100R initially was restricted to use by Lycoming-powered Cessna 172R/S Skyhawks. What is the current state of play in Europe’s transition to unleaded aviation gasoline? How many piston aircraft are affected and what will EASA require for different models to burn unleaded avgas? This presentation will discuss the remaining challenges and logistics of converting to unleaded aviation gasoline.
